Having collaborated with the National Communication Museum (NCM) for some time, we developed a distinctive visual identity for Signal to Noise that combines cutting-edge technology with a futuristic aesthetic. The process began with close collaboration with curators and artists to craft a visual language that captured the exhibition’s core theme—transforming noise from mere disruption into an engaging signal. This approach ensured the identity was both innovative and cohesive, setting a dynamic tone for the exhibition.
The core of the identity is deliberately non-static; instead of a fixed logo, we created a constantly evolving visual system. Using d3.js—a data visualisation tool—we generated a logo composed of 10,000 interacting nodes. These nodes attract and repel each other, causing the logo to fluidly shift between clarity and chaos. This visual dynamism reflects the exhibition’s exploration of the relationship between order and disruption, directly tying the identity to the curatorial intent.
To ensure the visual identity complemented the artworks without overshadowing them, we designed it to be adaptable across various platforms and mediums. We used a custom web-based tool to generate multiple resolutions and formats of the logo, enabling seamless application across outdoor advertising, digital screens, social media, and exhibition materials. This flexibility allowed us to create a consistent, immersive experience that enhanced the space without competing with the installations.
Finally, applying the visual identity throughout the exhibition space involved thoughtful collaboration with production teams to maintain consistency across environments—glass surfaces, backlit displays, acoustic panels, and more. Its dynamic, motion-based qualities fostered an engaging atmosphere that reinforced the thematic exploration of noise and disruption, making Signal to Noise not just a visual journey but a compelling, cohesive experience that extended beyond the physical and digital realms.
