The Beacon occupies a special position within the Melbourne Recital Centre, both physically and conceptually. Perched above the city, the venue offers an intimate setting for musical performances alongside an exceptional outlook across Melbourne. Rather than treating it as simply another extension of the MRC brand, we wanted the identity to capture the sense of discovery and exclusivity that comes with entering a new space at the top of the building.
The visual identity takes its cue from the idea of a beacon of light. A simplified, more subtle interpretation of the polygonal window forms established within the Melbourne Recital Centre masterbrand creates a distinctive visual language for the new venue. The typography echoes these same angular forms, creating a contemporary identity that feels closely related to the MRC logomark without simply repeating it. This balance allows The Beacon to establish its own character while remaining part of a recognisable family.
Colour and materiality further reinforce the venue’s sense of occasion. A rich blue drawn from the venue’s interior palette is paired with warmer brown tones, while blue metallic foiling introduces a subtle sense of luxury across applications. The Beacon symbol also appears etched into glassware and is adapted for bespoke brooches and cufflinks created for donors Peter and Ruth McMullin. Together, these details create an identity designed not just to be seen, but experienced.
